그러나 물밑에선 격전이 벌어지고 있었다. 두 그룹의 최상층부는 이미 소송이 알려지기 전부터 분주하게 움직여 온 것으로 파악된다. 4대 그룹 관계자는 "회장이나 회장 선친의 일은 곧 그룹의 일"이라고 말했다.

삼성은 이맹희씨의 소송을 무력화하는 데 주력해왔다. 씨제이그룹과 가까운 한 재계 인사는 "씨제이가 이맹희씨 소송을 지원하려다 삼성의 압박에 못 이겨 중도 포기한 것으로 안다"고 전했다. 재계 일각에서는 지난해 6월 씨제이가 주도하던 대한통운 인수전에 삼성에스디에스(SDS)가 갑자기 뛰어든 것도 이맹희씨의 소송과 무관치 않다고 보고 있다.

 

The lawsuit began that month when Samsung demanded that CJ sign a memorandum stating that it would not make an issue of the inheritance. Even now, Samsung maintains that CJ is providing support for Lee's suit behind the scenes.

 

이맹희씨의 소송은 지난해 6월 삼성이 씨제이에 '상속지분 문제를 제기하지 않겠다'는 각서에 서명하라고 요구한 게 발단이 됐다. 삼성 쪽은 지금도 씨제이가 이맹희씨 소송을 은밀히 지원하고 있다고 생각한다.
